Everyone

In the interests of minimalism Cow removed her Links a while ago, and has decided she wants them back.

So she's slowly rebuilding that category (having, in Cow-like fashion, mistaken the backup for a shrub and eaten it).

Not to worry. You will all be back on the sidebar though it may take a few days.

Recognition

Hard-working Topiary Trimmers usually toil, forgotten and unappreciated, their sacrifices for the noble cause of Topiary World Domination unrecognized and unappreciated.

Now, finally, a Film about the life of a Topiary Artiste. Hooray!

Broad Street is okay after all...

Broad Street Bakery makes bread, and Cow thought she would stop by there ....

...snip!....

In the interests of World Harmony, Topiary Symmetry and the ongoing pleasure of a life filled with nice things instead of crummy things, Topiary has pruned this blog entry....

Why? Because, as her revered blog posters noted, Jeff Good is a really nice guy, is trying to do good things for the neighborhood, and he called Cow to apologize.

So, all is forgiven and Cow will happily be trundling back to Broad Street to enjoy their bread and hopes everyone else will too!

Underachieving

Cow stopped into the Local Library today to return some books, and seized the moment to utilize the computers.

While really, really trying to keep her eyes on her own computer, she nevertheless peeked at the screen of the lady on the left.

Who is reading things in Japanese. And has a copy of TS Eliot Murder in the Cathedral next to her keys and cell phone.

Thus, Cow's blogging, email checking and various site visiting is seeming so inconsequential by comparison (Cow not reading Japanese, or really, any other languages too well).

But wait a minute, what's she reading now? It's a Sparks Notes cheat-sheet summary site about the TS Eliot book. Ha!

Cow not feeling quite so superficial after all.

Full Moon

Not since Topiary had two extra servings of chocolate mousse pie has she had such a surge of optimism, energy and hope as from reading Scones success in casting a luuuve spell.

Admittedly an amateur, Scones, or possibly her kitten and the oysters, acted upon the universe by casting a Personal Love Spell. Apparently it even worked on construction guys.

(Cow making shopping list and hoping the presence of Topiary will not adversely affect results.)

Units

For eight bucks you can see a moovie which cost $35 million to make. Or one which cost $180 million to make.

For about twice that, you can buy a CD which took a year's worth of studio time and countless numbers of talented musicians playing their hearts out ... or one made with pocket change and nobody you ever heard of.

Cow sees the efficiency of same-unit pricing and remembers those cost per unit vs number of sales charts from MBA classes. She still thinks it's stupid and illogical.

Too Hot

In honour of today's temperature of 100 degrees F, Cow brings you wishes for a cool ice cream pie and some shadeful Topiary.

Or, possibly, ice cream cone and a deep swimming pool.

Or, shorts, a hammock, and a nice breeze.

Movie Stars

Cow wonders just when it was that "star quality" lost as a qualification to be in the movies.

Cow thinks it was the 70's. Where Dustin Hoffman replaced Cary Grant. Where Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand, Rosie O'Donnell (okay, maybe she was 80's) replaced Greta Garbo.

Cow isn't sure what this elusive quality is. Yes, looks are important, but also interacting with the audience, enlisting them in your story, interesting them enough to stay for two hours, and maybe even come back again.

Even despite a lack of Topiary in the film.

Not cute, not smart, but rich...

According to one historian cited, the Bush administration has been "the most reckless, dangerous, irresponsible, mendacious, arrogant, self-righteous, incompetent, and deeply corrupt one in all of American history."

Cow wonders if the only explanation could be a Man Crush ...While Bush isn't attractive to Cow, apparently some other leader's actions can only be explained by Man Crush luuuuuuve.

Speaking of which, that's Adrian Paul...no relation to this blog. Unfortunately.

The Dark Knight

Cow can only say "Wow" to Christian Bale. Wow to Aaron Eckhart, and Wow to production values, the Batcar and to calling him "The Batman."

It WAS dark....but the cool factor made up for a bit of depressing apocalyptic vision of the world.

Best of all though, was a preview trailer for "A Quantum of Solace" the new James Bond. Oh my. Topiary will definitely be seeing that. How considerate of them to show so much of Mr. Bond's musculature and fine physique. Oh my.

Half-baked

Cow watched some late-night tv and saw one commercial after another for men's medicines. Ahem.

Not that Cow minds men using whatever they have to use. Not that Cow doesn't realize that any body can advertise anything they want as long as they pay for it.

What bothers Cow is having to listen to the endless, reduced-volume, serious-minded announcements of the warnings and side effects. After Viagra and Cialis ads warning about certain things "lasting more than 3 hours" Cow admits she just doesn't want to know.

(Cow trying to empty her head)

Voices

Walking on the world's stage, those who speak up. So often their voices stilled prematurely.

Cow spent some time reading interviews with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, and contrasted them with those of, say, John Lennon. Princess Diana. Even the Price is Right guy. Others who had fame thrust upon 'em and then spoke to world issues, without a specific axe to grind. Just commenting, intelligently, and at times acting upon their beliefs.

Cow wishes them and wishes there were more like them stepping up to take their place. Not the paid commentators. Not the politicians. Just disinterested observers, noticing what is going on and afforded coverage to air their views.

Obsessions

One of the best things about the Internet is knowing that no matter what your obsession of the moment, somebody (or many somebodys) out there have it worse.

For instance, every review, interview and article about everybody who has ever been in Fleetwood Mac. Indexed, scanned, and arranged chronologically. Whew.

Cow watched a DVD from the box of Coldplay live. And it left her cold. But reading some of these interviews gave the answer. Yes, it's about the music, but it's also about being sexy. Which Fleetwood Mac has, and all-guy groups just don't.

Summer

Cow has been grazing the summer away with a big box of old DVD's passed on by a friend.

Cow admits to enjoying The Dance, live DVD of Fleetwood Mac. Cow now has a big crush on Lindsey Buckingham, and indeed all of Fleetwood Mac.

As for The Naked Gun 33- The Final Insult, Cow was laughing in her pasture at the scene with the arab terrorists, the armed postal workers, and the numerous nuns with squalling babies. Not to mention OJ Simpson in a co-starring role as a hot-dog vendor. Huh.

It's Wednesday

And time for a fluffy dessert.

Mid-summer, with months of melting to look forward to. Must find pool. Must find shade, or make it. Must have ice cubes clinking in glass of iced coffee, good conversation and something sprightly and witty to read.

Why, of course! (Cow quickly perusing the newest entries of her talented blog posters). Must catch up, have been sluffing off.

Photo shamelessly stolen from Professor Plank of Tennessee, who had the good fortune to be invited to France for a conference, where he enjoyed the scenery and photographed the meals.

Shrubbery

Pierce Brosnan and his wife attended a premier, and Cow was so glad to see that flowered gowns are still stylish....since Cow often bedecks her Topiary with garlands in the summer.

Cow was thinking this weekend about how, before the Internet, if you wanted to know more about something, you would take a trip to the library and look it up, or possibly ask people you knew.

Now, hardly a day goes by that Cow doesn't have many Things to Look Up.

Today it was Stephen Stills (after seeing an article about Crosby, of Crosby, Stills, and Nash), various economic sites for indicators (GDP etc), causes of the Great Depression (reportedly, tight tariffs, strict gold standard, too much money in the hands of the wealthy few, decrease in crop supports, not enough Fed support for banks) and correlating the supply of oil with demand (there IS more supply than demand according to this clever article predicting a puncture in the Oil Price Bubble).

Cow wonders if everybody's head is now different now that it's filled with all this extraneous crap and useful nuggets of information...oh, wait, need to look up interviews on Anne Hathaway to see what she says about her boyfriend...

Panic

"Panic occurs only when people feel they may be trapped, when there is a sensation of great helplessness, and a sense of great isolation.

As long as humans have at least one square yard of space each, they can control their own movements. With less than that, people lose the ability to counter the jostling of others; small lurches get amplified, and the crowd becomes unstable. In some cases all it takes is one or two people to panic...."

Cow re-reading bits of The Unthinkable by Amanda Ripley, sticking out her elbows and preparing for her next trip to the discount gas station...

Friendly

This upbeat, cheerful, chocolate moment has been shamelessly stolen from Cadbury's.

Trying to balance out the news that President Bush signed a $165 Billion dollar bill for more Iraq war.

Pretty sure that's just guaranteed Obama the seat.

Organizing

Cow admits to having waaaay too many links...favorites bookmarked on several different browsers, links on my blog, links here, there, everywhere.

Cow has decided to get organized and put all in One Place: Google Reader.

To this end, she's moved her blog links to her Reader. You aren't gone, you're just mooooved.
